Case study: from Traccar to a branded GPS platform

· 4 min read

How to turn a Traccar server into a platform with your brand, and the path a tracking company takes as it grows.

The starting point

Many tracking companies start with Traccar: it's free, supports hundreds of protocols and it works. The problem comes when they want to sell the service: the interface says Traccar, the reports are generic, and the end customer expects something carrying their provider's brand.

What we did

  • A login screen with the client's branding.
  • A custom dashboard with a map, unit list and reports.
  • A view adapted for tablet and mobile.
  • The Traccar engine left intact underneath, so device compatibility is preserved.

You can see the result in the custom Traccar project.

The next step: your own platform

When the operation grows (hundreds or thousands of units, multiple resellers, branded apps), customization falls short. At that point the way forward is a platform built to run as a business: large-scale fleet monitoring as in this platform, end-customer apps like Nextop GPS and web services to third parties.

Custom or white label

Not every company needs to build its own platform. The same team maintains TrackeraX, a white-label GPS platform, and builds custom developments on top of it. We compare both paths in this article, and everything we do in tracking is at custom GPS tracking platforms.
